In African Societies, Lucy Mair unites the two main strands of anthropology teaching: the discussion and illustration of the various analytical concepts used by anthropologists in the study of social systems; and ethnography - the detailed study of particular societies, nowadays obtained by participant observation. Her chapters each concentrate on a different aspect of society as it is generally analysed by social anthropologist, illustrating it by a description of a single African society. Other aspects of the society are covered, using the standard ethnographic accounts as data, so that the picture presented of each society is fully rounded as well as exemplifying the special aspect. All the societies discussed are in sub-Saharan Africa.
