The First Five-Year Plan (1953-57);
The "Great Leap Forward" and Readjustment (1958-65);
The "Cultural Revolution" (1966-76);
A New Plan for Socialist Modernization (1976-84).

Tracing the course of developments through the ups and downs of each period, the authors sum up basic achievements and analyze shortcomings and mistakes in each period since 1949.
