The author looks at 4 cities, Baltimore, Liverpool, New York and Los Angeles and the problems which affect everyday life  such as gentrification, affordable housing, the accountability of local governments and the power of corporations, and how city dwellers challenge these forces, and analyzes them with a Marxist perspective
