The Seminole War (1835-42) was the longest, bloodiest, and most costly Indian war in America's history; it involved Indians, whites, and hundreds of blacks who had escaped from Southern slaveholders to live among the Seminole in Florida. In his compelling narration, Milton Meltzer describes the protagonists and the issues: "On the one side, whites greedy for land and the slaves to work that land. On the oter side, Indians who had the land and sheltered the run-away slaves--and would not give them up." In the end, "four thousand Seminole were driven into exile by a mighty nation that boasted of its justice, its honor, and its love of liberty. The Florida Indians and blacks defended their home and their freedom with a desperate tenacity that has few parallels in the annals of colonizers and conquerors."
