Description

[from the back] "The Loyal Blacks is the definitive account of the first American blacks to return to Africa...Some 1,500 ex-slaves are the protagonists of the story, blacks who joined the British army in the Revolution, left the States to go to Canada in 1783, and then joined 400 blacks from London to start the West African colony of Sierra Leone.  There they fought to make an independent life, surrounded by African tribes and slavers,  Freetown, their settlement, was attacked and sacked by a French fleet. The blacks were at odds with the British governors of the colony, and their struggle for independence culminated in a rebellion which failed."
