Published originally in Afrikaans in South Africa, Poppie Nongena provoked a political storm, became a bestseller, and has gone on to inspire an internationally acclaimed play.  This novel is based on the actual life story of a black woman living in the Cape area of South Africa today.  Only her name, Poppie Rachel Nongena, born Matati, is invented.
