Description

To provide an understanding of the background of con temporary Japanese civilization, the editors present material that illustrates Japanese thought since earliest times.  The traditions represented range from early Shinto and Buddhism to Confucianism.  Appearing here are such figures as the versatile Kukai, founder of the esoteric school of Buddhism; Seami, the great No dramatist; Hideyoshi, the foot-soldier who dreamed of world conquest; and Yamaga Soko, early exponent of the Way of the Warrior.

Compiled by: Ryusaku Tsunoda, Wm. Theodore de Bary and Donald Keene.
