Twice the Work of Free Labor: The Political Economy of Convict Labor in the New South

A history of the convict leasing system and the chaingang in the South after emancipation.  Convicts, mostly African Americans worked at mines, railroad camps, brickyards, turpentine  farms and road gangs.
