When the first factories were built in America in the 1820s and 1830s, in places like Lowell, Massachusetts, many of the workers were young women like Lucy Hall. Daughters of Men is about the women who worked in America's first factories-- where they came from, how they came to work in the textile mills, and how the struggled to maintain their independence in a new world of opportunity and exploitation.
