At age 17 Richman was organizing for Young Communist league, later became an organizer for the Marine Workers Industrial Union.He was a journalist for the Daily Worker and the People's World in San Francisco. He and other California Communists were convicted under the Smith Act, the conviction was overturned by the Supreme Court.  he discusses the relationship of the American Socialist party to the German Social Democratic Party and of the American Communist party to its Soviet counterpart and the Comintern.
