Kingdom of this World, The

This is a novel told from the perspective of an elderly slave named Ti Noel, living under the despotic rule of King Henri Christophe, who was born as a slave in Grenada, but went on to become the king of Haiti, the first black king in the Western Hemisphere, shortly after the end of French imperial rule.  The story illustrates Henry Christophe's regime as being just as abusive as the French.
